John Drescher draws from his experiences as a father, pastor, counselor, seminary professor and writer in this program designed to help parents interact more lovingly and productively with their children aged six to twelve. Referring to this time as the "missing age of childhood" because so few books have addressed the special needs children have during these years, this video--based on the advice provided in Drescher's book When Your Child is Six to Twelve (included with the program)--is comprised of three separate segments covering such issues as the importance of spending more time with children, maintaining physical closeness (hugs) prior to the stand-offish teen years, continuing the practice of reading to children, and imparting moral values, with the aim of providing children with a strong sense of their own identities, adequacy and self-worth. While there are frequent references to God and general Christian values, the material is still likely to be welcomed by viewers of many faiths since the emphasis is on children's needs and not on particular Christian teachings. Drescher teaches in a pleasant manner, employing a light sense of humor while presenting in a living room setting filled with parents of children in this target age group. Recommended. Aud: P. (E. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
