This first volume in a 53-tape series produced by the non-profit Medical and Health Education Association, is a half-hour introduction to diabetes. Using a single camera, talking head approach, a physician discusses the widespread prevalence of diabetics in America, uses a sketch pad to draw and explain the pathophysiological nature of the disease, explains the difference between Type I and Type 11 diabetes, talks about the use of insulin in controlling the disease, and briefly examines diet and general health factors. Although the information is sound, the primitive use of the video medium greatly reduces the appeal of this otherwise useful program. Too, although several of the other tapes in the series cover their topics in one or two programs, there are no less than 15 separate programs devoted to the subject of diabetes. On the plus side, the tapes are quite inexpensive for medical videos. Public libraries may want to purchase one volume and then decide. Some of the other volumes cover subjects not readily available on the home video market-such as male impotence, vasectomy, amputation, and lead poisoning. Although we cannot recommend this particular title, we do suggest you write to the company for more information on their complete line. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
