David Redmon and Ashley Sabin's fly-on-the-wall documentary spends four eventful years with a young Mexican couple. Both 21 as filming begins, Cecy and Camilo live in Reynosa, where they each make a pittance working in factories: Camilo is employed by Johnson Controls, which produces fire hydrants, while Cecy makes eight pesos (roughly 67 cents) an hour working for Rey Mex, which manufactures bras for Victoria's Secret. The pair are saving to buy land and build a house for themselves and their two-year-old daughter, Loida, who lives in Puebla with Cecy's mother (who doesn't allow the parents to speak to their daughter because it upsets the child). When Cecy and Camilo visit a year later, Loida doesn't recognize the pair, and even though relations with their daughter ultimately improve, the trip puts a strain on their marriage. Filmed by Redmon and Sabin (Kamp Katrina), as well as their subjects, Intimidad boasts a distinct you-are-there quality in which Cecy and Camilo are comfortable enough to discuss personal matters without self-consciousness (grainy footage from hidden cameras also captures the factory interiors). Intimidad has a universal feel: the central duo are representative of millions of poor people, who work hard and defer dreams—sometimes indefinitely—just to put food on the table. DVD extras include a 48-minute version of the film and an hour of bonus footage. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (K. Fennessy)
