Narrated by Tom Brokaw, this History Channel-aired biographical profile covers the notable career of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., from his almost accidental assumption of a leadership role in the struggle for racial justice in the South to his adoption of nonviolent protests, through his civil rights campaigns in various cities and opposition to the Vietnam War, finally concluding with his tragic assassination and posthumous influence. By focusing not only on triumphs but also the setbacks, King's accomplishments seem all the more remarkable. Featuring abundant archival news footage (which also serve as a fine introduction to King's powerful oratorical abilities) and excerpts from interviews with those who worked with King in the Civil Rights movement (including Andrew Young and Harry Belafonte), as well as family members, and later admirers (including former President Bill Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Bono, and others), King brings human dimension to a man often treated as an icon, while also underscoring his central importance in modern American history. DVD extras include the bonus full-length documentary Voices of Civil Rights, which offers firsthand testimony from participants in the movement, as well as those—in the case of a repentant KKK member—who opposed it with violence. A respectful and uplifting account of King's life and significance, King is highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (F. Swietek)
