This might be a movie plot first: car alarms drive a man crazy. Seemingly mild-mannered New York lawyer David Owen (Tim Robbins) is pushed by the blare of the city's car alarms into extreme behavior, vandalizing the vehicles that create a racket. Not surprisingly, his actions lead to arrests and jail time, which—in turn—result in the collapse of his marriage and a dismissal from his law firm. Undeterred, Owen adopts the moniker “The Rectifier” and begins leaving a calling card at the places where he wreaks havoc against noise polluters. After Owen's crusade begins to draw public attention, he is approached by a somewhat mysterious Russian woman (Margarita Levieva), who gives him the idea of initiating a citywide referendum on car alarms—but the city's sleazy mayor (William Hurt) wants the campaign halted and Owen captured. While Robbins makes a game effort to breathe enthusiastic life into his character, writer-director Henry Bean's dark comedy is just too thin of a tale to warrant feature-film length. Not recommended.
