Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) takes on anti-alien activist Ben Lockwood, aka Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer), in the fourth season of this CW superhero series. Lockwood wraps himself in the flag as he stokes fears over aliens from other planets taking refuge on Earth, but the real culprit behind what appears to be a grassroots movement is evil genius Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer), Superman's greatest villain, who is manipulating events to shift public support against Supergirl and fellow heroes J'onn J'onzz (David Harewood), Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath), and new character Nia Nal (Nicole Maines)—the latter also the first transgender superhero on TV. When the anti-alien movement takes hold in the government, the Department of Extranormal Operations shifts its mission from protecting humans and benevolent aliens alike from threats to rounding up all aliens. The conflict puts a strain on Supergirl's relationships with Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), who is the best friend of her human alter ego Kara Danvers, and her own sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), whose memory is partially wiped to protect Kara's identity from being exposed. Like the X-Men movies and the Fox TV spin-off The Gifted, the show takes on racism and prejudice (as well as the current anxiety and political hysteria over illegal immigration) through the prism of sci-fi/fantasy, and also makes a case for the importance of a free press in a democratic society. Compiling all 22 episodes from the 2018-19 fourth season, extras include crossover episodes of The Flash and Arrow, plus behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. Recommended.
