As with a number of other entries in Disney's lamentable line of direct-to-DVD prequels and sequels, Ariel's Beginning fails to capture the magic of the original film, despite better than average animation and the voice work of Jodi Benson and Samuel Wright, who reprise their classic roles as Ariel and Sebastian. Blame a story that's flatter than a mackerel: King Triton bans singing from the kingdom following the death of his beloved wife, while palace governess Marina Del Rey (a lively Sally Field) plots to usurp Sebastian's role as Triton's aide-de-camp. The Little Mermaid ushered in a second golden age of Disney animation, but Ariel's Beginning seems more designed to keep the revenue stream flowing. The songs are likeable enough, but even the relatively lively “Jump in the Line” production number—set at a clandestine club where forbidden music is played—fails to make any kind of splash like “Kiss the Girl” or “Under the Sea.” Optional.
