One of the most invigorating and genuinely chilling anime titles to cross the Pacific, 11 Eyes centers on Satsuki Kakeru, who witnessed his sister's suicide and was raised in an orphanage. Living an already profoundly bleak life, Satsuki and his friend Yuka are suddenly transported into an alternate universe, where they are attacked by monsters. The pair manage to return to their normal surroundings, only to discover that their adventure did not result in lost time. Afterwards, the two return to this parallel realm, dubbed “Red Night,” where they meet other humans, who are known as “fragments.” Together, the bewildered travelers face a malevolent force called the Black Knights, and in order to triumph, Satsuki must exorcise hidden memories surrounding his traumatic past. Without spoiling the plot twists, one can say that 11 Eyes takes highly unexpected detours into a world of richly developed fantasy, sporting animation that is bold and striking, along with fully-realized characters harboring both frailties and unexpected strengths. Compiling all 12 episodes (originally aired in 2009) plus the OVA on two discs, in Japanese with English subtitles, rated TV-14, this is highly recommended. (P. Hall)
