Maverick special agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) can't catch a break: he's been blackmailed, hunted, framed, imprisoned, tortured, and abandoned by the very government he risked his life to protect over the course of seven seasons. In the eighth and final run of this tension-filled drama, just as Bauer is about to get his life back, he's called upon to save America one more time. It looks like mission accomplished until Bauer loses yet another loved one and goes over the edge, embarking on a scorched-earth rampage of vengeance. Despite the now familiar package of traitors and moles and bad decisions undercutting the course of justice, 24's energetic storytelling and cliffhanger structure remain addictive. Mary Lynn Rajskub is back as newly promoted Chloe O'Brian at Counter-Terrorist Unit, as is disgraced former FBI agent Renee Walker (Annie Wersching), who turns out to be even more fanatical than Bauer. Cherry Jones is President Allison Taylor, who is trying to sign a landmark Middle East peace treaty while her insidiously corrupt predecessor (Gregory Itzin) pushes her to sacrifice her ideals. Freddie Prinze Jr., Katee Sackhoff, Mykelti Williamson, and Michael Madsen are among the costars featured in the 24 episodes from the 2010 final season compiled here. Extras include extended episodes, deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Recommended. (S. Axmaker)
