“That's our show. Not a lot of people watched it but the joke's on you, because we got paid anyway.” Tracy Jordan's sendoff at the conclusion of 30 Rock's season finale could very well serve as the series' epitaph. Critically lauded, 30 Rock was never a broadly appealing show, but the shortened 2012-13 final season—a mere 13 episodes—certainly gave the small, but fervently devoted fan base satisfying closure: Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), happy at last in love and work; Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), achieving career fulfillment with his A.S.S. (analyze, strategize, succeed); final encounters with some of the show's most memorable recurring characters (Jack's mother Colleen, played by Elaine Stritch, and his ruthless teenage nemesis Kaylie, played by Chlöe Grace Moretz); and an impressive roster of guest stars and celebrity cameo appearances (Catherine O'Hara, Tony Bennett, Bryan Cranston). The writing is as rarified as ever, with brilliantly off-center visual and verbal gags, while the core ensemble remains fully committed to the craziness. Extras include episode audio commentaries, a Fey-led set tour, deleted scenes, and a webisode of the animated “The Donaghy Files.” Recommended. (D. Liebenson)
