Here's yet another incarnation of the classic mystery-comedy cartoon series…and an entirely superfluous one at that. Think Scooby-Doo Babies: not only have the teenaged characters from the original series been shrunk down to elementary-school size, but the cases they solve are also commensurately smaller—a stolen bike and a Headless Skateboarder being the mysteries of the day. And, of course, there's not so much of the barely disguised stoner humor that ensured the original series a place in the annals of pop culture. These 13 episodes from the 1988 Saturday-morning-cartoon first season are “geared toward preschoolers and kids,” according to the Warner Home Video press release, although—frankly—even very small children would likely be more interested in watching new PBS Kids programming, rather than a decade-old cartoon in which the pun-filled episode titles—such as “Cheddar Alive” and “Now Museum, Now You Don't”—are way more clever than the shows themselves. DVD extras include stuff that won't be of much interest to the targeted tykes, including character dissections, plot comparisons with the original series, a pencil test animatic, and more. Not a necessary purchase. (M. Johanson)
