In this continuation of the adventures of the sword-swinging Afro, voiced by Samuel L. Jackson (see review of Afro Samurai in VL-7/07), the black samurai is enjoying a short-lived peace following his ascension to “Number 1” status, which he earned after defeating Justice, the man who killed his father. Alas, being Number 1 carries a price, particularly unwanted attention from Afro's ex-best friend Kuma and Kuma's sexy-but-dangerous sister Sio—evil siblings who want to take away Afro's “Number 1” status (and accompanying special headband) and resurrect Afro's dead father. All of this naturally translates into considerable blood-spattered angst for involved parties. Much of the fun derives from the voice performances of Jackson (in a dual role as Afro and his imaginary sidekick Ninja Ninja) and Lucy Liu as the deadly Sio in this oddball anime offering inspired by Takashi Okazaki's original manga. DVD/Blu-ray extras include an abbreviated video commentary, a behind-the-scenes documentary, several featurettes, and a booklet. Recommended. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
