This mini-docudrama focuses on the admission of an 84-year-old woman to a nursing home, and the lackadaisical treatment she receives from the receptionist to the nurse's aide. Fictionalized, ostensibly to broaden the audience for the film, this well-acted vignette shows Lilian faced with the impersonality of institutional living-from the casual exhortations of a staff member to just take her medicine without asking questions to the quick introductions that Lilian receives when she's sat down with a table of strangers to eat. Occasional attempts at humor-such as roommate Bertha's comments on her favorite soap "As the World Spurns" - are trite and out of context with the overall seriousness of the program. In the final analysis, however, this video is meant to be a discussion starter for staff in nursing homes, and that is precisely the audience for it. General library patrons would be simply confused by a short film which features a handful of scenes representing key friction areas in the treatment of the elderly in nursing homes. Nursing home administrators may find this useful, but we cannot recommend it for general purchase. (Available from: Tricept Productions Film Library, 445 W. Main St., Wyckoff, NJ 07481.)
