Serving up an uneven blend of talk, action, and video-game-centric adolescent romantic comedy, this anime series dense with otaku jokes and Internet culture has its moments. In the online role-playing fantasy game Legendary Age, schoolboy Hideki—gamer tag “Rusian”—knows that appearances can be deceiving. He once proposed to a cat-girl avatar who then admitted to be a male in real life. Still, in the online realm Rusian is in a platonic “marriage” to Ako, a novice fellow player. When he meets his teammates in real life, he finds that they are all actually fetching females (one is a teacher). Hideki doesn't mind that the offline Ako is a winsome classmate, but she believes their non-digital relationship should be just as intimate as online. Will Hideki/Rusian ever feel as strongly for Ako as he does about acquiring magic items or completing quests? Much jiggly fan-service cleavage ensues as the series progresses, with further secret identities, hackers, and other twists that tend to stretch the material silicon-wafer thin at times but still puts across the theme of personal-growth-via-gaming. Presenting all 12 episodes from 2016 in a dual-language Blu-ray/DVD Combo edition, rated TV-14, extras include select episode commentaries with the English-language cast, and a music video. A strong optional purchase. (C. Cassady)
