This four-episode 2017 BBC adaptation of Louise Doughty's bestselling 2013 novel centers on an illicit affair between married scientist Yvonne Carmichael (Emily Watson) and a mysterious stranger (Ben Chaplin). The couple share a mutual passion for having sex in public places, and she is not eager to learn her lover's identity. But Yvonne's world begins to unravel when she is raped by longtime friend George (Steven Elder). Unable to continue her affair, she considers resigning from her job and spending more time with her family, but then changes her mind after she learns that her husband spent an adulterous weekend with an intern from his company. When George begins to stalk Yvonne, she confides in her anonymous lover, and the two agree on a plan that will lead to more problems than solutions. Under Jessica Hobbs's skilled direction, Apple Tree Yard deals with a myriad of complex situations with an emotional power that places it well above the standard-issue melodrama. The story moves at a harrowing pace, and the lead actors shine, especially Watson's tour de force performance as Yvonne, who goes from carnal highs to soul-shattering lows. A provocative and intense miniseries, this is highly recommended. (P. Hall)
