Based on the popular manga series, Azumanga Daioh follows the day-to-day high school experiences of a group of female students and three of their teachers. The usual stereotypes abound--including the 10-year-old genius, the well-endowed loner, the tomboy, and the space cadet--and there are no males of any importance in the story (save for the leering, drooling gym teacher) or family members. Like an American television sitcom, this series requires some initial commitment on the part of the viewer to become familiar with the characters, but ultimately this group is personable, funny, and fairly realistic, and the running gags are cute (one girl named Sakaki regularly tries to pet a cat on the street and without fail it bites her). Compiling the first five episodes, this dual-language disc features a reversible color cover, 12-page booklet, clean opening/closing animation, and production sketches. Sure to appeal to viewers looking for a warm, comedic change from the more familiar special effects extravaganzas, this is recommended. [Note: Azumanga Daioh: Festivals! Vol. 2 is also newly available, with Rivals! Vol. 3 slated for release on July 20.] Aud: P. (J. Halsall)
