Baccano! The Complete Series

For those tired of anime series that appear to be endlessly recycling the same plots, this kaleidoscopic epic (comprising 13 episodes originally broadcast on TV during the 2007–08 season and three released as separate DVDs) will reconfirm one's faith in the genre's ability to create imaginative work. Most of Baccano! takes place in a 1930s-era New York City that bears more resemblance to its representation in classic gangster flicks than the genuine Depression-ravaged metropolis. A violent ride on a transcontinental train called the Flying Pussyfoot (complete with a homicidal monster riding the rails with a well-heeled passenger list) kicks off a mad mix of gangsters, thieves, killers, psychopaths, the power elite, and an immortality elixir created by demon-summoning alchemists in 1711. The various over-the-top ingredients are raucously mashed together, creating an astonishing explosion of perverse humor, bloodshed, machismo action, and some harsh emotional angst. Sporting a jazzy score, an unusually large ensemble of well-defined personalities (no single character dominates), and a dollop of neurotic energy that fuels the overlapping, nonlinear stories, Baccano! is worlds removed from the usual anime fare. Compiling all 16 original episodes on a dual-language, three-disc set, suitable for 17-up, DVD extras include episode commentaries and a promotional video. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
