Between the third and fourth seasons of the made-for-cable revival of Battlestar Galactica, the Syfy Channel commissioned this original 2007 telefilm, which rewinds back to the first mission of the Battlestar Pegasus after Lee “Apollo” Adama (Jamie Bamber) takes command under the watchful eye of his father (Edward James Olmos), while also exploring the backstory of the Pegasus between the Cylon blitzkrieg and the reunion with the Galactica. Michelle Forbes returns as Admiral Helena Cain for the flashback scenes to dramatize Cain's journey from military officer to ruthless guerilla warrior, while a new character, Major Kendra Shaw (Stephanie Jacobsen), becomes a focal point when she's chosen by Apollo as executive officer on the eve of the Cylon attack and is shaped into a “razor”—an instrument of war—by Cain. Although the story stands on its own outside the series timeline, it's likely to appeal almost exclusively to fans of the show. Extras include audio commentary by producer Ronald D. Moore and writer Michael Taylor, deleted scenes, a pair of behind-the-scenes featurettes, and “minisodes.” Also included in the “Complete Series” box sets on both DVD and Blu-ray, this is a strong optional purchase.
