A collection of a half-dozen 30-minute programs made for German television in 1996, this excellent DVD--presented in Dolby Digital stereo--offers appreciations of six of the most celebrated tenors of the early 20th century: Enrico Caruso (1873-1921), Beniamino Gigli (1890-1957), Tito Schipa (1889-1965), Richard Tauber (1891-1948), Leo Slezak (1873-1946) and Joseph Schmidt (1904-1942). For each singer the producers have tracked down whatever scraps of film exist, as well as characteristic recordings, which are intelligently excerpted (the audio quality of the vintage material is hardly the best, of course, but the ear quickly adjusts, and the performances themselves are quite magnificent). Combining analysis with celebration, the programs also feature conversations with artists who shared the stage with the subjects, reminiscences from elderly fans, and observations from biographers and musical experts who point out the distinctive qualities of each man's voice and vocal weaknesses as well as strengths. As a historical document this is an important, beautifully produced, compilation--but it's far more than a curio: anyone interested in opera or outstanding vocalism will find it a fascinating introduction to some of the greatest singers of the last century. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (F. Swietek)
