With supernatural characters and stories more popular than ever, this Canadian series (which plays on Syfy in the U.S.) adds another entry to the werewolf subculture. Based on the Otherworld novels by Kelley Armstrong, the show stars Laura Vandervoort as Elena, the sole she-wolf in a pack centered just outside Toronto. Elena is trying to live in the city as a human, but an attack on the pack takes her back to the homestead where alpha wolf Jeremy (Greg Bryk) is struggling to hold the family together. Elena holds a bit of a grudge for being turned into a beast, but she's their best tracker and a valued member of the group. Bitten plays up the sex and animal passion angle, as Elena is torn between human boyfriend Philip (Paul Greene) and hot-tempered wolfman Clayton (Greyston Holt), a former lover with control issues. An episode doesn't go by without the fetching Vandervoort stripping down (either for sex or a wolf transformation) to present teasing glimpses of skin, all carefully concealed with shadows and strategic camera angles. A supernatural thriller and clan melodrama peopled with good-looking young adults who are keeping secrets and running wild, Bitten is overly grave—far less lively or inventive than Teen Wolf—but it has its fans and is slated to return for a second stretch in 2015. Compiling all 13 episodes (with footage not seen in the U.S.) from the 2014 debut season, extras include audio commentaries with Vandervoort and others, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and deleted scenes. A strong optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)
