In this sprawling anime series, the focus is on the partnership between a fairly ordinary bounty hunter (called a “sweeper” here) named Sven and a truly extraordinary assassin (or “eraser”) named Train Heartnet. The latter is nicknamed Black Cat, because anyone who crosses his path is assured an unlucky fate. Train's on the run from his former employers, the Chronos Numbers, while Sven has his hands full as a surrogate father figure for the young Eve, who is actually a genetically engineered bio-weapon designed to look like typical anime jailbait. In addition, there's a raucous Taoist revolutionary group called the Apostles of the Star, led by one Creed Diskenth, who seek to kill anyone opposed to their off-kilter view of Taoism. It turns out that Creed is particularly keen on bringing about Eve's demise, which creates no end of problems for Train and Sven. Over the course of this 24-episode series things have a tendency to go from bad to worse for all and sundry, as a succession of compelling mini-adventures find the good guys, the bad guys, and those in between trading shots and insults. More entertaining than strictly logical, Black Cat is presented in a dual-language six-disc boxed set, rated TV-PG. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
