This superior anime focuses on high schooler Yuji—diagnosed with an incurable virus—who agrees to be placed in artificial hibernation in hopes of waiting for a future cure. When Yuji is awakened, however, the world is very different: for starters, a mysterious creature called the Blue has taken over Earth and turned human beings into appetizers. Yuji is rescued by soldiers from the space station Second Earth, who have returned to the Blue-ravaged planet to wake up and collect all known “sleepers.” Needless to say, the mission doesn't go exactly as planned, but giving away more of the plot would ruin the genuine thrills and excitement of this compelling 26-episode adventure. The soul of this production lies in the remarkable relationship that develops between Yuji and the soldier Marlene Angel (who was obviously christened by a Von Sternberg fan!). For a genre in which genuine human emotions often take the proverbial backseat, the Yuji/Marlene pairing is much more complex than one might expect. Presented in a dual-language nine-disc boxed set, rated TV-PG, DVD extras include audio commentary, character sketches, image galleries, extended songs, and more. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (P.
