How can bee stings be merely bothersome for some people but life threatening for others? What causes food poisoning? Why should you be concerned about the flu? These questions and many others are answered in Body Story: Fighting Disease, an outstanding three-tape series from the Discovery Channel School label, built around live action dramatizations of persons suffering from allergies (Vol. 1, Allergies), food poisoning (Vol. 2, Germs), and influenza (Vol. 3, The Flu). With the aid of computer graphics, viewers are shown how the body's immune system kicks into high gear to overcome these different types of maladies, even as they gain an understanding of the etiology behind these troublesome and/or potentially lethal conditions. Although the producers recommend this series for junior and senior high audiences, entry level college biology and health classes will find it useful as well. Included with each volume is a short teacher's guide containing a program overview and a lesson plan based on National Academy of Science Education Standards. Highly recommended. [Note: Also newly available, at the same price, is Body Story: Trauma, a three-volume set including Broken Bones, Heart Attack, and Trauma.] Aud: J, H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
