This ninth season of this witty forensic mystery series opens with the suspension of the nuptials between Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) after genius serial killer Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds) threatens to murder innocent bystanders if Booth marries Brennan, or tells her why he won't. The resulting anxiety and tension between the couple is relatively short-lived as the show finally writes out this unpopular villain early on, giving fans their wedding episode (complete with most of the recurring family members and regular “squinterns” in attendance), while also plunging the thoroughly logical Brennan into the new experience of married life. This is also the last full term for longtime costar John Francis Daley, who plays psychologist and profiler Dr. Lance Sweets (he bows out at the start of season 10). Meanwhile, Brennan's boss, Cam (Tamara Taylor), deals with identity theft, and a government conspiracy culminates in a finale that finds Booth in a fight for his life. Bones injects buddy-movie byplay and nerdy humor into the usually humorless forensic crime show formula, and the cast chemistry, perfected over the years, has kept it a popular series. Compiling all 24 episodes from the 2013–14 ninth season, extras include an audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurette, Comic-Con segment, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. Recommended. (S. Axmaker)
