Heralded as the most sensational Scandinavian TV show since The Killing, the three 10-episode seasons of Borgen (2010-13) offer a more realistic and emotionally rewarding alternative to shows like House of Cards and The West Wing. Set in contemporary Denmark's governmental shadows, the series centers on the rise to power of Birgitte Nyborg (Sidse Babett Knudsen), the country's first female prime minister. Unlike Frank Underwood or Jed Bartlet, Birgitte is neither morally corrupt nor naively idealistic, although both instincts are never far from the surface. Birgitte's schooling in the unseen machinations of social democracy is played out with dramatic intensity, bolstered by spirited performances from supporting characters that includes advisers, husband, children, lovers, journalists, and lackeys. While Machiavellian moves are an important aspect of Birgitte's reign (each episode is prefaced with a sardonically relevant epigraph), the overall tone is not purely cynical. Seasons two and three take Birgitte in unexpected directions related to international conflicts, private lives, and public sector dynamics. A must-see for connoisseurs of premium TV drama, this international hit is highly recommended. (T. Fry)
