By refusing to give up her seat in the “whites only” section of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, circa 1955, Rosa Parks inspired a boycott organized by several influential members of the local African-American community. What began as a simple protest over discriminatory seating ended up giving rise to the Civil Rights Movement and its most charismatic leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. Both the movement and the man are nicely recreated in this stylishly crafted telefilm, with Jeffrey Wright (Basquiat) not only capturing the familiar rhetorical flourishes and cadences of King, but also convincingly portraying a nobly righteous man conflicted by responsibility to his family as well as duty to his ethnic brethren. Highly recommended. (T. Rich)
