In this 1995 made-for-German-TV film (which originally ran 160 minutes), a very poised, surprisingly polished Catherine Zeta-Jones essays the title role of Catherine II, the beloved Russian monarch who assumed the throne in 1762. While the noble cast (which includes Mel Ferrer, Omar Sharif, Jeanne Moreau, and Ian Richardson) can't elevate this rather cheesy costume pic above the mediocre (the political machinations of the Tsarist monarchy are pretty much standard issue and the monochromatic "period" tint gets monotonous after awhile), Ms. Zeta-Jones definitely rules! An optional purchase considering the low price and high star power. (T. Rich)
