The third of the four dramas set in the Windy City from the production factory of Dick Wolf (Law & Order)—preceded by Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D., and followed by Chicago Justice—this hospital drama continues the familiar combination of medical melodrama and staff soap opera that has marked such fare since TV was in its infancy. But it adds a heightened degree of intensity that is characteristic of all Wolf's series. In this second season, the trauma unit of Gaffney Medical Center continues to face unusual cases, including one that involves treating a panda and another in which X-rays reveal the presence of a gun where it certainly does not belong. The staff also has to confront personal crises—illness, suicide, disagreements over diagnoses, deaths, romances that hit rough spots, divorces, and an assault by a disgruntled patient. A few crossover appearances by characters from the other Chicago shows add to the mix, and Betty Buckley guest stars as an elderly patient. The large ensemble cast is solidly anchored by veterans S. Epatha Merkerson, as the center's chief administrator, and Oliver Platt, as the head of the psychiatry department. Chicago Med may not reinvent the wheel, but it is a fine addition to a popular genre. Presenting all 23 episodes from the 2016-17 second season, this is recommended. (F. Swietek)
