Dick Wolf, who brought a whole new approach to the crime procedural with his Law & Order shows, returned to the old-school cop drama with Chicago P.D., which follows both the officers of the special intelligence unit and the cops in blue at a Chicago precinct station. The legacy of an older, more corrupt force hangs over the show thanks to Jason Beghe's Hank Voight, a tough guy running the intelligence unit who isn't above using his fists or worse to get answers or justice. Voight's elite unit includes Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush), who is like a daughter to Voight, Jon Seda and Jesse Lee Soffer as younger detectives, and Elias Koteas as another veteran of the bad old days, who is assigned to mentor Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) after she is promoted from beat cop to detective. This is the final season for Lindsay (whose exit is well-handled) and the show introduces robbery/homicide officer Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), who proves to be a good fit with the squad. Chicago P.D. plays like a classic ensemble cop drama, with multiple cases weaving through each episode that wrap before the closing credits, as well as characters from sister Wolf Chicago shows making frequent appearances. Compiling all 23 episodes from the 2016-17 fourth season, extras include bonus crossover episodes from Chicago Fire and Chicago Justice. A strong optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)
