This 2003 anime series set in New York City circa 1928 revolves around spunky young nun Sister Rosette of the Magdalene Order, and her partner Chrono. Together they brandish sacred weaponry in an attempt to destroy Aion, a demon terrorizing the city. Chrono has devilish powers of his own, which can be released only at Rosette's command; but there's a catch: her life is slowly drained away whenever Chrono uses his magic. The duo are aided in their cause by Azmaria Hendric, an angelic being (complete with wings) who has the ability to bring the dead back to life. Chrono Crusade often feels like an anime spin on Kevin Smith's 1999 comic film, Dogma, minus the slacker humor, pairing action aplenty with an audacious concept. Compiling all 24 episodes in a four-disc, dual-language set, rated TV-14, DVD extras include audio commentaries, and bonus background shorts featuring Azmaria. Recommended. (P. Hall)
