The short-lived Comedy Central 2000-01 series TV Funhouse was like a kids' show gone seriously and perversely off topic, with puppets doing naughty things (and using foul language) interspersed with cartoons about horny superheroes, parodies of 1950s educational films, and other grownup-oriented spins on children's television (including the infamous “Porn for Kids” sketch). The cleverness in the eight episodes compiled here varies wildly: the puppet bits lean heavily on juvenile toilet humor, but the educational films are spot-on sendups of socially-constructed anxiety (the one arguing that bowel movements are the Devil's temptation proves that toilet humor doesn't have to be juvenile). The brainchild of humorist Robert Smigel—the former Late Night with Conan O'Brien writer (inventor of Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, who appears here as well) and longtime Saturday Night Live contributor (responsible for the notorious “Get a Life” sketch with William Shatner)—TV Funhouse arrives on DVD with extras including audio and video commentaries, “dirty outtakes,” and behind-the-scenes footage. Optional. (M. Johanson)
