“Bad boys, bad boys…whatcha gonna do when they come for you?” The longest-running reality series in TV history celebrates its 20th birthday with the release of this double-disc set, which compiles more than five hours of material from the show's first two decades, including the 1988 pilot (conceived during a Writers Guild strike to fill air time on the fledgling Fox network), a 20th anniversary special, and loads of memorable segments from each season. Among the stellar array of supplemental features, viewers will find hilarious spoofs of the show, behind-the-scenes featurettes, interviews with cops, and celebrity testimonials from such famous fans as Luke Wilson, Chris O'Donnell, and Pete Sampras. Of course, for many viewers the onslaught of so much handheld camerawork will induce blurry vision, and—quite frankly—it doesn't take long to tire of seeing overfed, drunken, and/or half-naked perps trying to outrun the police. But for better or worse, COPS is part of the pop-culture zeitgeist, and fans of the show will definitely appreciate this set. Other DVD extras include optional commentary on the pilot by executive producer John Langley. A strong optional purchase. (E. Hulse)
