Got Cow Belles? Looking to milk the popularity of sister act Alyson and Amanda Michalka (Aly and A.J. to their devoted ‘tween fan base), the Disney Channel rustled up this star vehicle for the fast-rising pop sensations. It's anything but the simple life when spoiled siblings Taylor and Courtney are forced by their fed-up father to take a summer job at the family dairy, where the girls gradually shed their careless and condescending ways after uncovering an embezzlement scheme that threatens the dairy and the good people who work there. Given the clichéd initially antagonistic relationship between Taylor and the cute local farm boy, the time-honored broad physical comedy set pieces, and the humanizing lessons learned, Cow Belles can make little claim to originality, but the Michalkas are wholesome stars in the Olsen mold, and parents can safely trust the Disney Channel brand of lighthearted, age-appropriate fun. A strong optional purchase. [Note: DVD extras include an alternate ending, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and a pair of music videos. Bottom line: a so-so extras package for a so-so family film.] (D. Liebenson)
