As good as its debut season was, Cracker: Series Two is unexpectedly superior. Leading off with "To Be a Somebody"--a three-part story generally regarded as one of the show's best--the second series (1994-1995) finds the line between police psychologist Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald's (Robbie Coltrane) life and work disappearing, as the crimes he investigates and criminals he trails come to have a profound impact on his colleagues and family. The fallout of extraordinary events--including the murder of one major character and rape of another--carry over to the subsequent stories "The Big Crunch" and "Men Should Weep," culminating in the latter's shocking climax and cliffhanger ending. Boasting terrific guest performances--especially a villainous turn by Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting)--this three-disc compilation features a somewhat lackluster transfer and no extras, but fans will definitely want to see. Highly recommended. (T. Keogh)
