A popular film when it aired on TNT late last year, Crazy From the Heart, the video, adds some spicy language, but is otherwise identical to the TV version. Christine Lahti and Ruben Blades star as Charlotte Bain, a high school principal in a small Texan town, and Ernesto, the new janitor, respectively. Approaching middle age, Charlotte tries to put the marital armlock on the school's coach Dewey, who she's been dating for the past seven years. Dewey wriggles out of the proposal, and Charlotte is approached by the charming Ernesto. On a mad weekend in Mexico, Charlotte throws caution and sobriety to the wind and marries Ernesto. When she returns, small-town prejudice is waiting to greet her--and she must choose between her heart and her career. The first half of Crazy From the Heart is mostly winning, if also bearing the trademarks of situational comedy; but the second half takes a deep dive. Giving in to peer pressure, Charlotte leaves Ernesto and becomes engaged to Dewey (who is now interested in marriage). Ernesto can't change her mind, but one utterly predictable meeting with the school board (in which Charlotte is basically chastised for consorting with a Mexican) has her running self-righteously back to her husband. That's not love, and these characters deserve better than this contrived anti-prejudice ending. Not recommended. (R. Pitman)
