Movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer brought feature-quality writing and production values to episodic TV with the Emmy-award winning series CSI, and this spin-off has garnered considerable praise on its own. Collecting all 25 episodes from CSI: Miami's 2002 debut season, this boxed set spotlights a brighter-looking show, taking place mostly during the daytime in sun-bleached Miami, as opposed to the nocturnal Las Vegas settings of the original. David Caruso brings his trademark intensity to the role of crime-scene investigation team leader Horatio Caine, and Emily Procter emerges as the most interesting supporting character, ballistics expert Calleigh Duquesne. Some first-season episodes also feature Kim Delaney--like Caruso, an alumnus of NYPD Blue--but she washed out before the series hit its stride. Overall, the mysteries here are solidly constructed and, as in the Vegas-set original, the series' interest is sparked from watching the tedious work that goes into analyzing the most minute bits of physical evidence. In addition to a handful of commentaries from the show's writers and producers, who describe the filming of key scenes and reveal interesting background info, this seven-disc compilation also includes five behind-the-scenes featurettes. Recommended. (E. Hulse)
