Hitmeisters of the 1970s-‘80s Hall & Oates pay homage to their Philadelphia soul roots in this nearly track-by-track performance of their 2004 tribute album Our Kind of Soul, filmed in a rather weird recreated club setting (people are actually playing pool during the concert). Although Hall leads on vocals, Oates acquits himself well on a few numbers (including a rousing cover of the Dramatics' “What You See Is What You Get”), and the duo are backed by a solid band on guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, and sax for such retooled audience favorites as “Standing in the Shadows of Love” (The Four Tops), “I'll Be Around” (The Spinners), “Neither One of Us” (Gladys Knight & the Pips), “You Are Everything” (The Stylistics), and “Ooh Child” (The Five Stairsteps, with whom the duo made their first concert appearance). Presented in excellent DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo, this little bit of (white) soul may not quite be as rich as Michael McDonald's work in the same vein, but Hall & Oates know how to give props to the artists who inspired them and give it up with palpable enthusiasm here. DVD extras include a nice trio of mostly acoustic guitar performances of their own hits “Sara Smile,” “One on One,” and “Maneater,” as well as a 15-minute interview with the band. Highly recommended.
