Based on Hank Ketcham's long-running comic strip, this CBS series presents a child's-eye view of the world. Dennis (Jay North, so indelibly typecast he couldn't transition to adult roles) routinely leaves havoc in his wake (the animated tornado that spins through the show's opening credits is an apt metaphor). “Mom,” the boy asks when his mother tucks him in, “why do you always say, ‘thank goodness' instead of ‘good night'?” Dennis is a terror, especially to put-upon neighbor Mr. Wilson (Joseph Kearns). But the jury's out on whether his efforts are well-intentioned mishaps (as when he “helps” Mr. Wilson paint his house), or whether he's the demon seed (as when he hatches an elaborate plan to sneak away from home to go to the movies). His parents (ably played by Herbert Anderson and Gloria Henry) have no illusions and, to quote Mel Brooks, hope for the best but expect the worst. Shout! Factory has done its usual impeccable job, compiling all 32 uncut episodes from the 1959–60 first season, along with generous bonus features, including an episode of The Donna Reed Show (in which Dennis makes an appearance), original series promos and period commercials, and interviews with Gloria Henry and Jeannie Russell (who played Dennis' female nemesis, Margaret). A burst of baby boomer nostalgia that could resonate with modern youth, this is recommended. (D. Liebenson)
