Given that the anime genre is so wildly over-the-top, the notion of a parody seems redundant (anime itself is a parody of both the basic tenets of animation and human experience). Even so, this very funny offering often succeeds as parody as it follows 19-year-old Suzuo, who's looking for a job to pay for his college expenses and somehow winds up getting recruited by the Galaxy Federation Police, a universe-wide crime fighting force with a considerable personnel shortage. After one of GFP's recruiters, the lovely Tampopo, decides that earthling Suzuo would be a perfect candidate to join the force, he comes aboard under the code name Dokkoida and is given his own superhero costume: a set of high-tech diapers. After donning same, Suzuo/Dokkoida launches into his miscreant-busting duties with the cry “for the good of humanity…and rent money!” Speaking of rent, all of the Galaxy squad resides in the same apartment building, but the GFP prevents them from recognizing each other out of costume, which makes life complicated since many of their arch-villains also reside in the same complex. Dokkoida!? is a brash, funny, good-natured romp that will entertain anime addicts with its sly pokes at the genre (and for sheer hilarity, nothing beats the idea of an adult superhero saving the universe while clad in diapers!). Rated 13-up, this dual language disc is highly recommended. [Note: Dokkoida!?, Vol. 2 is also available, with Vol. 3 slated for release on Jan. 11.] Aud: P. (P. Hall)
