The strangest, funniest, most surreal superhero series around, Doom Patrol is based on a cult comic book about a team of offbeat, isolated characters with unusual powers that isolate them from society. Diane Guerrero (of Orange Is the New Black) is top-billed as Crazy Jane, a young woman with 64 separate personalities each with her own superpower, but the biggest names in the cast are Brandon Fraser as Robotman, a former race driver whose brain is saved in a heavy robot body, and Matt Bomer as an astronaut whose body is inhabited by an energy being. They live as a dysfunctional family with a former Hollywood starlet (April Bowlby) whose flesh turns to putty, in a manor owned by The Chief (Timothy Dalton). When he is kidnapped by the vengeful Mr. Nobody (Alan Tudyk), they rally under the leadership of Cyborg (Joivan Wade), the young superhero with his own identity and family issues. This is both a wildly creative show that includes a character who is a gender non-binary city street named Danny and features snarky, self-aware narration by the show’s villain. Doom Patrol is a character-driven drama about damaged, tormented people working through deep psychological issues through the lens of a superhero fantasy, and it features a bold, clever storytelling approach. It is the breakout hit for DC Universe, a specialty streaming service with a small subscriber base, so disc is the first opportunity for many interested viewers. For fans of superhero shows and offbeat shows with creative storytelling. Compiling all 15 episodes from the 2019 debut season, extras include a gag reel and deleted scenes. Highly recommended. (S.
