Drake Bell (as Drake Parker) and Josh Peck (as Josh Nichols), formerly of The Amanda Show, were inexplicably given their own Nickelodeon series, Drake & Josh, a kind of Goofus and Gallant odd couple comedy about two mismatched high school kids whose respective single parents marry. Hardly one of Nick's finest half hours, the show's stars--Bell and Peck--are, for want of a better phrase, actors from the Saved By the Bell school of acting, and the series itself is characterized by much shouting, lame jokes, and tiresome stereotypes. In the pilot episode, after “okay” Drake discovers that “unusual” Josh dons a dress to write the school's “Miss Nancy” advice column, he blackmails his stepbrother into helping him land a date with the school's most popular girl, a shallow blonde who thinks it's romantic when her jealous jock boyfriend mistakenly decks Josh. The second episode on this two-fer, "Dune Buggy," isn't much better. DVD extras include two bonus episodes and outtakes. An apparently popular show, but one which is unlikely to stand the test of time, this is not recommended. Aud: P. (D. Liebenson)
