In this CBS primetime series that offers a variation on the Groundhog Day plot, Chicago stockbroker Gary Hobson (Kyle Chandler) loses everything—job, home, wife—and moves into a hotel room, where the Chicago Sun-Times is promptly delivered each morning. But here's the twist: each paper is always the following day's edition, and with the help of skeptical friends Chuck (Fisher Stevens) and Marissa (Shanesia Davis-Williams), Gary attempts to change the course of future history by heading off various disasters reported in its pages. Among the best of the uneven 23 episodes of the 1996-97 season are the pilot (whose supporting cast includes Felicity Huffman, one of many future stars who appeared on this series during their salad days); “The Choice,” in which Gary faces a decision of whether to save a little girl or prevent an impending plane crash; and “The Wall,” a two-parter that finds Gary racing against time to prevent the U.S. President from being assassinated—a crime for which he'll be accused. A strong optional purchase. (E. Hulse)
