Eastbound & Down: The Complete Third Season

Danny McBride returns as Kenny Powers, the biggest jerk (and the most unjustified ego) in professional baseball, in this rude HBO comedy series. After dropping out and landing a spot with a Mexican team in the second season, he works his way back into the American minor leagues as the star pitcher of the Myrtle Beach Mermen but is on the receiving end of a real curveball when his overwhelmed ex-girlfriend, April (Katy Mixon), leaves him with his out-of-wedlock infant son. Dragging baby Toby around in book bags and on the back of his motor-trike, Kenny tracks down his sycophantic friend Stevie (Steve Little), reconnects with his estranged parents (Don Johnson and Lily Tomlin), and even develops paternal feelings for the tyke he's trying to pawn off on somebody else—anybody else—while fighting off the challenge of hot young Russian pitcher Ivan Dochenko (Ike Barinholtz). The crude humor is all built around a porn-addicted character with no self-awareness or empathy but plenty of determination to always be the center of attention. And several guest stars bring equally outsized personalities to the story, including Will Ferrell, Jason Sudeikis, and Craig Robinson. Compiling all eight episodes from the 2012 third season, extras include audio commentaries, deleted scenes, and outtakes. A strong optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)
