Everwood is an unusually satisfying family drama-comedy airing on the WB network, a fish-out-of-water story with powerful and appealing core relationships and a handful of regular eccentrics to keep things interesting. Treat Williams stars as world-class neurosurgeon Andy Brown, whose New York City practice caters to the wealthy and who has neglected his wife (Brenda Strong) and two kids for years. After his better half dies in a car accident, Andy is faced with seething resentment from his teenage son, Ephram (Gregory Smith), and fear and confusion from his young daughter, Delia (Vivien Cardone). Andy opts for a wholesale reinvention, moving the family to little Everwood, Colorado, and opening a free medical clinic in an old train station. With extreme changes come new challenges, including ill will from the town's preeminent doctor (Tom Amandes) and an achingly complicated relationship between Ephram and a girl (Emily VanCamp) who pines for her comatose boyfriend. Over the course of the first season, surprising changes will occur in the connections between these folks, but it is the contentious tie between Andy and Ephram that proves the most riveting. Strong and original storytelling, smart dialogue, and gorgeous Colorado exteriors all combine to help make this one of the best recent shows on television. DVD extras include cast and crew commentaries on four episodes, an extended pilot, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes camcorder-shot featurette, and a "making-of" featurette. Highly recommended. (T.
