Creator Rockne S. O'Bannon's ambitious sci-fi series was just beginning to assume its most satisfying identity when cancellation loomed on the horizon, as evidenced in these first five episodes from the show's fourth and final season, which signal a return to a smart, entertaining blend of humor, drama, and action after the doom-laden seriousness of the previous season. Even newcomers to the series would find this two-disc set enjoyable, especially given the helpful bonus feature "The Story So Far," which thoroughly summarizes the previous adventures of Earth astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder), who was sucked into a wormhole that catapulted him into a dazzling and dangerous galaxy full of alien friends and enemies. Essentially, this five-episode arc is about Crichton's eventual reunion with Aeryn (costar Claudia Black), which is preceded by an elaborate plotline in which Crichton must cope with scheming enemies Grayza (Rebecca Riggs) and Scorpius (Wayne Pygram), and he discovers an ancient artifact that might hold the key to his safe return to Earth. Featuring tantalizing dangers such as a vicious six-legged monster dog, an amphibious killer, a planet with a maze-like system of lava caves, and an archaeological dig full of ancient secrets, these five fast-paced episodes benefit from impressive production values and (for the first time in the series' history) are presented in an anamorphic widescreen format. DVD extras include bloopers, deleted scenes, a featurette on visual effects, informative "Farscape Facts" and alien profiles, and a smart, engaging interview with Riggs. Recommended. (J. Shannon)
