This second British TV series to feature G.K. Chesterton's titular Catholic priest--who also happens to be a natural-born sleuth--isn't nearly as faithful to the short stories as the 1974 ITV series starring Kenneth More (VL-3/07). Only half of the 10 episodes from this 2013 BBC-aired show are actually based on Chesterton's original tales, and even those are very loose adaptations—featuring material that likely would have made the author blanch. Still, the hour-long mysteries compiled here make for an agreeable addition to the numerous other shows based on classic detectives such as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Mark Williams exudes the rumpled, quizzical air appropriate to Father Brown (once portrayed on the big screen by Alec Guinness), while Sorcha Cusack makes a fine foil as Bridgette McCarthy, the parish secretary who is both highly opinionated and defensive about her boss. The remaining recurring cast members--particularly Nancy Carroll as a supportive socialite, and Hugo Speer as a police inspector exasperated by Brown's interference but appreciative of his insight—also shine in plots that range from the bludgeoning of an Anglican curate's despicable brother, to a “locked room” murder within a pagan cult, to the public electrocution of an unpopular mayor at a village festival. Lushly shot at lovely locations in the English countryside, this take on the beloved Father Brown may not please Chesterton purists, but others will find it an enjoyable period mystery series. DVD extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette. Recommended. (F. Swietek)
