The third season of AMC’s spin-off from its monster hit The Walking Dead begins with the Clark family—mother Madison (Kim Dickens), son Nick (Frank Dillane), and daughter Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), along with Madison’s boyfriend Travis (Cliff Curtis) and Nick’s girlfriend Luciana (Danay García)—being confined at a base where experiments on the walkers are being conducted. The locale quickly changes, however, to a ranch presided over by Jeremiah Otto (Dayton Callie) and his sons Troy (Daniel Sharman) and Jake (Sam Underwood), who are at war with Native American leader Qaletaqa Walker (Michael Greyeyes) over land and water—a conflict that will inevitably involve the Clarks. A related thread focuses on greedy Strand (Colman Domingo), the returned from apparent death Daniel (Rubén Blades), and control of a dam. As usual, death can come abruptly—even to leading characters—so that by the explosive finale the cast has become fairly depleted, paving the way for new faces to join the survivors in their battle to evade the zombie apocalypse. Fear the Walking Dead has never matched the success of the parent series, and while this season offers a few surprises, it mostly traverses fairly well-trod territory. Presenting all 16 episodes from the 2017 third season, extras include episode commentaries, and deleted and extended scenes. A strong optional purchase. (F. Swietek)
