Created for PBS to fill the void left by the death of actor John Thaw and the demise of Inspector Morse, this intriguing Masterpiece Theatre miniseries is set during World War II in the villages along England's south coast. Michael Kitchen stars as stoic detective Christopher Foyle, who wants desperately "to be more relevant to the war effort." But as he discovers in this quartet of mysteries, just because he is far from the front lines, doesn't mean he is far from the action. In The German Woman, The White Feather, A Lesson in Murder and Eagle Day (all also available separately), Foyle solves a series of "provincial murders" that simmer with wartime tensions and connections. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, the DVD set includes interviews with series creator Anthony Horowitz, as well as production notes and cast filmographies. Sure to appeal to British mystery fans, this is recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
