Anarchy is the hallmark of Freakazoid!, a crazy cartoon series in the Looney Tunes spirit that serves up a constant rush of pop culture references and smart-aleck wit, all designed to appeal to the 11-year-old in each of us. Freakazoid! follows the adventures of an unconventional superhero who is part Spider-Man and part Daffy Duck, changing from the nerdy Dexter Douglas (voiced by David Kaufman) into Freakazoid (Paul Rugg) whenever the day needs saving…or he's bored. Freakazoid is like an over-caffeinated Jim Carrey, meeting danger head-on with a rubber face and endless, self-referential patter that can invoke anything or anyone (such as Jerry Lewis). Drawn to the true-blue Steff (Tracy Rowe) and challenged by such evil-meisters as the Lobe (David Warner), Freakazoid is an effective do-gooder but an even better improvisationalist. Boasting a great vocal cast that also includes Ed Asner, Craig Ferguson, Ricardo Montalban, and Stephen Furst, the 14 episodes from the 1995 first season compiled here also feature material built around other characters, such as the great “Lawn Gnomes” (ancient Irish dwarves cursed to spend their days as statues and nights as crimefighters), and “Lord Bravery” (a condescending British superhero very much inspired by John Cleese's Basil Fawlty). DVD extras include three episode commentaries and a behind-the-scenes featurette. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
