The popular Full Metal Panic! anime series continues in this 13-episode third season offering, and while a familiarity with the first two seasons would be helpful in acclimating the viewer to the various personality quirks of the characters, it isn't a prerequisite for enjoying this slam-bang adventure. In typical anime fashion, the focus here lies on teenagers leading bizarre double lives, particularly anxiety-torn high school student Sousuke Sagara, who is engaged in a secret after-school life as a key figure in the mercenary anti-terrorist organization Mithril, which uses mech-robots to blow up key installations around the world. When not leading his troops, Sousuke is fighting his own emotions, including his growing fondness for lovely classmate Kaname Chidori, who proves to be quite a distraction for Sousuke (of course, she also plays her own distinctive role in this futuristic drama). New to the series is a plotline about internal dissension within Mithril, plus the machinations of the evil twin sisters Xia Yu Fan and Xia Yu Lan (twin brothers in the original manga). As with previous seasons, the action here is fast and furious, and Sousuke's combination of raw machismo and teenage cluelessness never grows stale. Rated TV-14, this dual-language set features DVD extras including audio commentaries on all episodes, a bonus OVA (original video animation), an additional episode, and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
